Scottish Seabird Centre – Craigleith Island and the Bass Rock
A glimpse of a hidden world I was invited by the Scottish Seabird Centre to take part in something special, a rare visit to Craigleith, the uninhabited island that sits just off the coast of North Berwick. Home to colonies of rare and endangered seabirds, Craigleith is usually off-limits to the public. My task was to capture video and photography by drone, documenting the island and its wildlife from above. It was an extraordinary experience. With no signs of human activity and surrounded by sea on all sides, Craigleith feels almost untouched, a step back into another time. The stillness, the sound of the waves and the movement of the birds made it one of the most peaceful shoots I’ve ever done. The views I captured are ones most people will never see, and it was a genuine privilege to join such a talented team of conservationists, scientists and volunteers on their mission to protect the island’s wildlife. A small island, just 700 metres from the mainland, but a world away.
